At King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), we recognize that poverty in all its forms is one of the most pressing global challenges. As a leading academic institution, KMUTT is committed to contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1), which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. Through a combination of research, education, community engagement, and social innovation, KMUTT plays an active role in tackling poverty both locally In 2024, KMUTT continues its dedication to eradicating poverty by focusing on inclusive development and empowering communities, particularly the marginalized and vulnerable populations. The university leverages its academic resources, research expertise, and collaborative initiatives to create sustainable solutions that help uplift individuals and communities from the cycle of poverty.

Educational Initiatives for Poverty Alleviation
One of KMUTT’s primary approaches to combating poverty is through education. The university firmly believes that education is a powerful tool for empowering individuals and breaking the cycle of poverty. Through various scholarships and financial support programs, KMUTT ensures that talented students, regardless of their socio-economic background, have access to high-quality education.

The university offers scholarships for students from underprivileged communities, including those from low-income families and rural areas, to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent them from pursuing their dreams. KMUTT’s commitment to providing equal educational opportunities helps create pathways for young people to rise out of poverty and contribute to society in meaningful ways. In addition to scholarships, KMUTT offers training programs, skills development workshops, and vocational courses that focus on empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the job market and achieve financial independence. By providing access to higher education and skills development, KMUTT helps foster a generation of leaders and change-makers who can drive economic growth and reduce poverty in their communities.

Research for Sustainable Poverty Reduction
KMUTT’s research initiatives play a key role in addressing the root causes of poverty and developing sustainable solutions for poverty alleviation. The university engages in interdisciplinary research that focuses on economic empowerment, social inclusion, and sustainable development. Through collaborations with local governments, NGOs, and international organizations, KMUTT researchers work to identify innovative solutions that address the chronic issues associated with poverty, such as lack of access to education, unemployment, and food insecurity.

Community Engagement: University-Society Partnerships
KMUTT actively engages with local communities through a variety of social development projects aimed at improving living standards and reducing poverty. These projects involve partnerships with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders to identify key challenges faced by marginalized groups and implement effective solutions.

The university’s “University to Community” initiative has been a cornerstone of KMUTT’s efforts to address poverty. Since its inception in 1982, this initiative has focused on knowledge transfer and technology application to improve the living conditions of low-income communities. By working directly with local communities, KMUTT helps empower people, strengthen local economies, and build sustainable futures for those affected by poverty. In addition to the University to Community projects, KMUTT also organizes volunteer activities and student-led community engagement programs. These programs not only benefit the community but also instill in students a sense of social responsibility and civic engagement, encouraging them to be active contributors to poverty reduction and social change.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment
KMUTT also focuses on entrepreneurship as a means of economic empowerment. The university has established incubators and entrepreneurial training programs designed to support low-income individuals and small businesses in creating sustainable enterprises. Through the Hatch Center, KMUTT promotes the development of business ideas that contribute to the local economy and create job opportunities in areas with high poverty rates. By fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among students and community members, KMUTT helps create new avenues for income generation and economic independence. These initiatives not only support startups and small businesses but also provide financial literacy and business management training, enabling individuals to develop self-sustaining livelihoods.

Policy Advocacy and National Development KMUTT’s role in advocating for policies that address poverty is also significant. Through collaborations with government agencies, research partnerships, and policy dialogues, the university actively participates in discussions on poverty alleviation and sustainable development at the national level. By leveraging its research expertise and academic influence, KMUTT provides valuable insights into how national policies can be aligned with the goal of ending poverty in Thailand.

In 2024, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) continues to be an active force in the fight to end poverty in all its forms. Through education, research, community engagement, and entrepreneurship, the university is addressing the root causes of poverty and working to create sustainable solutions for those in need. KMUTT’s commitment to inclusive development and social impact ensures that the university will continue to play a pivotal role in building a society where no one is left behind. By empowering individuals, supporting local communities, and advocating for effective policies, KMUTT is making significant strides toward achieving SDG 1 and contributing to the global effort to end poverty.
