King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) participated in the “60+ Earth Hour 2022” event, themed “Turn Off the Lights for One Hour to Reduce Global Warming.” Assistant Professor Dr. Prasert Kanthamanon, Senior Vice President for Administration, announced the university’s commitment to sustainability regarding its energy and environmental management system. The event, presided over by Mr. Chatree Wattanakhajon, Deputy Secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, took place on March 26, 2022, from 20:30 to 21:30 hrs at the Sathorn Skywalk, Chong Nonsi, Sathorn.
This year, KMUTT joined hands with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and WWF Thailand in the “60+ Earth Hour 2022” initiative. The campaign encouraged businesses, shops, and the public to reduce energy consumption and turn off non-essential lights, such as decorative lights, building lights, and advertising signs. Participants were also urged to unplug unused electrical appliances and reduce air conditioning use in buildings for one hour from 20:30 to 21:30 hrs. This was a demonstration of changing behaviors to protect the environment by reducing energy use and unnecessary lighting.
As a university with a clear policy on sustainability in energy and environmental management, KMUTT declared its intention to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 (KMUTT Carbon Neutrality 2040). This declaration aligns with the national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The event resonates with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, specifically Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, developing relationships with network partners for future development and preparedness, and Goal 13: Climate Action, organizing activities to combat climate change.
