The Student Quality of Life and Engagement Development Unit under the Student Affairs Office at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) recently organized a hands-on training workshop on “Crisis Negotiation Skills”. This initiative aimed to equip university staff with the necessary skills to handle crisis situations effectively and provide mental health support to students in distress.
The training program was officially opened by Mr. Somporn Noiyano, Assistant to the President for Student and Learner Ecosystem, who delivered a welcoming speech to the expert trainers and participating staff members.
Expert Lectures and Real-Life Crisis Simulations
Participants attended specialized lectures on key topics, including:
🔹 “Crisis Management” – Presented by Pol. Col. Panupol Chaisinith
🔹 “Principles and Techniques of Crisis Negotiation” – Led by Lecturer Walli Thammakosit
🔹 “Understanding Different Personality Types in Negotiation” – Taught by Lecturer Salika Kowboonngarm
In addition to lectures, participants engaged in realistic crisis simulation exercises, divided into three key scenarios:
1️⃣ A hostage situation involving an aggressive individual holding a student captive
2️⃣ A confined emergency response (Knockdoor scenario)
3️⃣ A suicide intervention scenario involving a distressed student
Each scenario was guided by expert instructors, ensuring that participants practiced crisis negotiation techniques correctly and efficiently. These exercises prepared staff members to respond effectively to unexpected emergencies that could occur within the university environment.
Collaborative Safety Efforts Across University Departments
The training saw participation from 70 university staff members, including representatives from various faculties and key student support units, such as:
- Building and Facilities Management Office
- Health and Wellness Services Unit
The program aimed to enhance crisis negotiation competencies among university personnel while strengthening cross-departmental collaboration to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Panalee Tanprasan, Director of the Student Affairs Office, who reaffirmed KMUTT’s commitment to ensuring student safety in all dimensions.
