King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) has long recognized the importance of promoting equality and reducing disparities within and between countries. As part of its contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10), KMUTT is committed to reducing inequality by fostering inclusive education, expanding access to opportunities, and empowering underrepresented groups within the university and in the broader community. By prioritizing the principles of social justice, equity, and inclusivity, KMUTT works to create a fairer, more equal society.
Fostering Inclusive Education
KMUTT believes that education is a powerful tool for reducing inequality. The university has made significant strides in providing access to quality education for students from diverse backgrounds. This commitment is reflected in its broad range of scholarships aimed at supporting students facing financial challenges. These scholarships are designed not only to help alleviate the financial burden of tuition fees but also to ensure that students from underprivileged backgrounds have an opportunity to access higher education and unlock their full potential.
In 2024, KMUTT continues to expand access to higher education by offering scholarships specifically for students from marginalized communities, including students from rural areas, disadvantaged social backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The university is actively addressing barriers to access that have historically prevented these groups from pursuing higher education. By providing these opportunities, KMUTT strives to level the playing field and ensure that all students, regardless of their background, can achieve success and contribute to society.
KMUTT’s focus on capacity building in international contexts has led to projects that support underdeveloped countries by providing resources, knowledge, and training. By engaging in international development projects and global research networks, KMUTT works to reduce inequality not only within Thailand but also across borders, particularly in countries facing economic hardship, political instability, or social inequality.
Promoting Diversity and Inclusion on Campus
KMUTT promotes a campus environment that celebrates diversity, ensuring that people of all races, genders, ethnicities, religions, and abilities are treated with respect and dignity. The university implements inclusive policies that create an environment where students and staff feel safe and valued, regardless of their backgrounds.
KMUTT actively supports gender equality, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and the empowerment of women and girls in all academic and professional areas. By creating a diverse and inclusive campus, the university fosters an environment where everyone, regardless of their identity, can thrive and have access to the same opportunities.
Bridging the Digital Divide
In the 21st century, access to technology is crucial for education, professional development, and social participation. KMUTT recognizes the importance of reducing the digital divide, which disproportionately affects individuals in underprivileged communities. The university is committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds have access to the tools and resources they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
To achieve this, KMUTT has developed programs that provide digital literacy training and technology access to students in need. These programs are designed to equip students with the skills necessary to excel in a digital-first world, ensuring that no student is left behind due to lack of access to modern technology. Furthermore, KMUTT is working with local communities and international organizations to bridge the global digital divide, helping people in rural and underdeveloped regions gain access to digital resources and educational opportunities.
Supporting Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation
KMUTT encourages social entrepreneurship as a means of addressing inequality and contributing to sustainable development. The university supports students and faculty in developing innovative solutions to social problems, particularly those that address poverty, education disparities, and lack of access to healthcare.
KMUTT’s strong connections with the private sector, government organizations, and international firms offer students pathways to successful careers. By connecting students with these opportunities, KMUTT works to reduce economic inequality by ensuring that all graduates, regardless of their background, can secure well-paying jobs and contribute to the economy.
In 2024, KMUTT continues to actively contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reducing Inequality Within and Among Countries. Through inclusive education, international collaboration, support for diversity and inclusion, and economic empowerment, KMUTT is making significant strides toward creating a more equitable and inclusive society. The university’s commitment to reducing inequality both locally and globally reflects its vision of a world where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
